Libya not gonna be like Iraq

Not for Americans.

'President Barack Obama, addressing the American people directly for the first time since military operations began in Libya, offered no new details about how the U.S. commitment there will end, but pledged that it won’t become another Iraq.

“Regime change there took eight years, thousands of American and Iraqi lives and nearly a trillion dollars. That is not something we can afford to repeat in Libya,” Obama said.'

Libya does not have the sectarian issues that Iraq has.

Some differences between Libya and Iraq:
1) 15 enemy countries sent tens of thousands of foreign fighters, billions of dollars and de facto formed some of the major Iraqi resistance groups 2003-2007 [see comments by our mutual friend Nibras]
2) Qaddafi has no comparable international support
3) Rumsfeld and Cheney impeded efforts by Iraqis to build the ISF to win the war
4) Qaddafi isn't willing to commit genocide on the same scale as the Iraqi resistance
5) Fortunately Arabs consider Libyans to be fellow human beings, an honor too many Arabs refused to bestow on the 82% of Iraqis that were not Sunni Arab

Thanks for the great comment, Anand. I agree!

I would not bet on No. 4. Otherwise, I agree.

No 5 is bullshit. Being against the Iraq war is not being anti-Iraqi people. We dont want to see Iraq destroyed in order to change a regime, no matter how oppressive that regime is.

Regarding Libya, why not assassinate Daffy & Sayf, seems to me it would all be over. Maybe a top ranking general too

There is a fatua from 1982 signed by Bin Baz (ra7imahu llahu ta3aalaa) which says Qathafi is a non-muslim.

"Being against the Iraq war is not being anti-Iraqi people. "

But it is being pro-Saddam.

I think the Libyans will find it as hard to get rid of their dictator and his family as the Iraqis did.

No it is not pro-saddam. That is ridiculous. The war took the lives of 1 million Iraqis.

Saddam has nothing to do with the war in Iraq, he is practically irrelevant. Iraq got attacked because peasants & lamebrainz in the U.S. sought revenge after 9/11 by butchering some random country

But in Libya, the situation has nothing to do with 9/11 revenge, so the motives are clean in the Libyan case.
