Iraq to compensate US victims of Saddam

I wonder when Iraqi victims of Saddam will be compensated. $400 million is a large amount of money. That's $16 per Iraqi, assuming an Iraqi population of 25 million. So Iraqi victims of Saddam have to pay American victims of Saddam. It seems strange.

'Iraq has agreed to financial compensation for Americans who say they were mistreated by executed dictator Saddam Hussein's regime during the 1990-91 Gulf war, the US embassy said on Saturday.

"The agreement was signed on September 2," US Embassy spokesman David Ranz said.

He could not confirm the size of the settlement, but the Christian Science Monitor reported that Baghdad had agreed to hand over 400 million dollars (314 million euros) in compensation.

The deal was signed between Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari and US Ambassador to Baghdad Jim Jeffrey.

Iraq's August 2, 1990 assault on neighbouring Kuwait was rapidly met with a concerted international military response that pushed Saddam's forces out of the emirate and eventually ended in his ouster by a US-led coalition in 2003.

Several US citizens were held by Saddam's regime during the war over Kuwait and used as human shields to deter coalition attacks, with some claiming they were mistreated and tortured by Saddam's forces.'

This just goes to show that the Green Zone bitches are still the whores of the Americans. I'm not Iraqi and my face is burning at this indecency.

Anything that Saddam may have done to the Americans pales in comparison to the mayhem, destruction and carnage that the Americans inflicted on Iraq.

It's like a rapist getting his victims to pay up because they may have scratched him while resisting.

Disgusting. *spits*

"Another former soldier of Bravo Company 2-16 (2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment) has said in a radio interview that a controversial battalion commander ordered soldiers to open fire on civilians in an indiscriminate pattern of "360 rotational fire," upon being hit by an improvised explosive device (IED). The interview took place last month with Scott Horton of AntiWar.com Radio. "

If Iraq owes America 400 million $ for damages, God alone knows how much America would owe Iraq for what it has done.

Bruno said...

Besides, didn't the Americans already steal 9 billion dollars of Iraqi money? Money that was never accounted for? I mean, WTF?

Or, he thinks that every Iraqi that has suffered because of the invasion is "Saddam and the Baathists".

In which case, his head is stuck so far up his ass that not even the best drain specialists will be able to retrieve it.

[dolly ] "Yea but, it's not enough to merely point out the injustices, because Americans will just laugh about it. They don't care. [...] So you see, it's not enough to simply point out the injustices, there must also be a military wing.
Because the thing that makes Americans weep is the destruction of the WTC, and not an exposition of their crimes against other people."

There's a difference between military action against legitimate military targets and Al Qaeda blowing up buildings full of innocent people. The latter is precisely what the Americans have been doing in Iraq and elsewhere, and which people have been condemning non-stop. Just because the Americans were the targets on 911 does not make that action right. It remains immoral.

No, they suffer because your buddies ("the resistance") murder innocent women and children with callous impunity all throughout Iraq. This is compounded with the fact that Saddam (your hero) murdered his own people for decades. You need to pull your head out…

Saddam and "the resistance" are rape victims (by Americans) in Bruno's insane and warped mind. Don't act like you care for everyday Iraqis, you spent years cheering on the savage and brutal murder of everyday Iraqis.

Americans in Iraq:

" McCord said that he had also witnessed the order carried out, saying: "I've seen it many times, where people are just walking down the street and an IED goes off and the troops open fire and kill them."

Maury said...

Well, if McCord said it, it MUST be true. I get picked up by UFO's every other thursday. And Bruno knows it's true, because he read it on the internet.

Bruno said...

I see Maury is resorting to his usual 'defence' of not believing anything that conflicts with his quaint little world view.

That's OK, there are lunatics and delusional people the world over.

Remember your meds, son.

BACK IN THE REAL WORLD ... Iraqis react to Iraq paying millions of dollars to American 'victims':

"Ordinary Iraqis were shocked by the news their government would make the payout, at a time when thousands of people are struggling with crippling poverty and the disastrous humanitarian fallout from the US-led invasion.

Umm Samer, a mother of one from New Baghdad, a suburb of the city, burst into tears when she heard about the deal. Her 14-year-old son lost a leg when a US military vehicle accidentally ran over him five years ago. The family failed to get financial compensation from the US authorities, or aid from the Iraqi government, to help meet medical bills. “It’s impossible to imagine that our government will pay the Americans when our own people are still suffering from what the Americans have done here,” she said.

[... but why is Iraq ever even agreeing to such a ludicrous idea? ...]

Iraqi finance officials said paying the US compensation made fiscal sense, and would help to prevent Iraqi overseas assets from being frozen in banks. “By paying this money we are protecting Iraqi money,” said Mudher Mohammad Saleh, counsel to the governor of Iraq’s central bank. “If we didn’t make this payment and settle this case, the US would freeze our money under Chapter 7 provisions.”

http://thenational.ae/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100915/FOREIGN/709149830/1002

read that again:

“If we didn’t make this payment and settle this case, the US would freeze our money under Chapter 7 provisions.”

So, Iraq is still subject to Saddam-era sanctions legislation. Legislation which the US can activate to put enormous pressure on Iraq's government.

So much for morality ... and so much for a 'sovereign Iraq'.

Thanks for the advice, but I think that all the mouth-breathers are exactly the problem.

'The Iraqi Cabinet unanimously approved a $400 million settlement for Americans who say they were abused by Saddam Hussein's regime, the government spokesman said Thursday.

The agreement represents a significant step forward for Iraq and could bring an end to years of legal battles by Americans who claim to have been tortured or traumatized under Saddam's regime dating back to the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

The deal is likely to anger Iraqis who consider themselves the victims of both Saddam's regime and the 2003 U.S.-led invasion and they wonder why they should pay money for wrongs committed by the ousted dictator.

Saddam's government held hundreds of Americans hostage during the run-up to the 1991 Gulf War, using them as human shields in hopes of staving off an attack by the U.S. and its allies and many have since pursued law suits against the Iraqi government.

The settlement needs to be approved by the Iraqi parliament, a big hurdle given the likely public outcry over the deal and the fact that the legislature has only met once since the March 7 elections. The vote produced no clear winner, leaving Iraq still without a new government.

Government spokesman, Ali al-Dabbagh, did not mention the dollar amount that Iraq had agreed to pay in the statement released Thursday, but Iraqi officials previously have said that according to the agreement, signed Sept. 2, Iraq would pay about $400 million to Americans affected by the Kuwait invasion.

Any amount Iraq agreed on as compensation for the American victims of Saddam should be seen favorably and as a compromise between the two sides, given that the U.S. claims "exceed $10 billion," al-Dabbagh said.

He emphasized the importance of the deal with the Americans since it could pave the way to persuading the U.N. to lift sanctions imposed after the Kuwait invasion.

The Americans involved kept up their legal fight even after Saddam was overthrown in 2003 and a new government came to power. CBS News correspondent Bob Simon, who was held for more than a month during the Gulf War, was one of the people suing Iraq.'

For someone raised in America you sure do have a hard on for Saddam Hussein.

Anyone who spends 5 minutes on this silly blog can easily tell all you have our second and third hand stories you heard from someone. You don't sound like you really know anything about Iraq. Its obvious dude. You have nothing to do with it.

Psst! Ill let you in on a little secret. Americans have alot more respect for Saddam Hussein than they do for the puppets they installed, and neither one of those Iraqi teams ever heard of you.

Hey! Is "elie" still around? If so, where? I'd like to harass the little prick a bit. ;)

Bruno, the more you take the moral high ground, the more they will continue to abuse civilians.

This fact has been comprehended by shaykh Osama bin Laden, who himself hates killing, but understands that fighting poison with poison is the only way to stop them.

Everyone who has come out against violence, has been abused by the Americans.
Everyone who comes out against bin Laden's policy of 'retaliatory targeting of civilians,' has been locked up for life by the Americans.

Just today, Aafia Siddiqui said she didn't want her name to be used for justifying terror attacks. Result? They sentenced her to 86 years.

Simply put: OBL is right and the moderates are wrong.

If you think back, several months ago I asked you to root for Al-Qaa'idah, but you took a clear stand against them.

And what was the reaction?
Well, in his very next response, Aton said to you: "Your terrorist buddies."

See, you will get nowhere at all with condemning AQ, they will just tease you.

If you care about civilian lives, then the long term way to preserve them is to kill the civilians of the enemy until they refrain.

Dolly said...

You may be tempted to respond: "Sorry, but I fail to see how targeting a civilian in London has anything to do with the evil policies of Washington. To murder people in such a sick manner does nothing to solve matters, and actually contradicts the entire intention, because you stoop to the murderous level of the U.S."

See, that may be the feel-good reply for you, but if you say such things, what will be the outcome:

Aton will come and say: "How was the AQ Shura meeting today, Bruno?"

Trust me, they only perceive your condemnation of AQ as weakness, your condemnation of AQ will resolve nothing.
